What Is the EU Digital Identity Wallet?

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a digital wallet on the smartphone of every EU citizen. It contains cryptographically secured proofs of personal identity – national ID, driver's license, educational credentials, and in the future also event tickets.

The legal basis is the revised eIDAS Regulation (eIDAS 2.0), which entered into force in 2024. All 27 EU member states are required to provide their citizens with a compatible wallet by 2026.

In short: The EUDI Wallet is the digital passport of the future – except it doesn't just contain your identity, but also tickets, certificates, and access credentials.

How Does the EUDI Wallet Work Technically?

The wallet is based on the international standard ISO 18013-5, originally developed for digital driver's licenses. All credentials are stored as mDocs (mobile Documents) – cryptographically signed data packages that can be verified offline.

The Three Core Principles

OpenID4VCI – The Issuance Process

Issuers deliver credentials to the wallet via OpenID for Verifiable Credential Issuance (OpenID4VCI). This protocol is an open standard and ensures that every compliant wallet can receive credentials.

Timeline: When Does the EUDI Wallet Arrive?

Entryix is already compatible today. Organizers using Entryix now have a head start of years when the mandatory rollout arrives in 2026.

What Does the EUDI Wallet Mean for Event Organizers?

Tickets are stored as device-bound mDocs directly in the attendee's wallet. At the entrance, an Android device scans the credential – verification takes under 1 second, fully offline. This means: no forgeries, no duplicates, no black market.

Do Attendees Need the EUDI Wallet?

In the current beta, attendees receive cryptographically signed QR codes via email or WhatsApp – no wallet app required. Native EUDI Wallet integration is planned for Q1 2026.
