What Is the EU Digital Identity Wallet?

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a digital wallet on the smartphone of every EU citizen. It contains cryptographically secured proofs of personal identity – national ID, driver's license, educational credentials, and in the future also event tickets.

The legal basis is the revised eIDAS Regulation (eIDAS 2.0), which entered into force in 2024. All 27 EU member states are required to provide their citizens with a compatible wallet by 2026.

In short: The EUDI Wallet is the digital passport of the future – except it doesn't just contain your identity, but also tickets, certificates, and access credentials.

How Does the EUDI Wallet Work Technically?

The wallet is based on the international standard ISO 18013-5, originally developed for digital driver's licenses. All credentials are stored as mDocs (mobile Documents) – cryptographically signed data packages that can be verified offline.

The Three Core Principles

• Cryptographic signature: Every credential carries an ECDSA signature from the issuer. Forgeries are mathematically impossible.
• Offline verification: The scanner verifies the signature locally, without an internet connection.
• Device binding: An mDoc is bound to the device on which it was issued.

OpenID4VCI – The Issuance Process

Issuers deliver credentials to the wallet via OpenID for Verifiable Credential Issuance (OpenID4VCI). This protocol is an open standard and ensures that every compliant wallet can receive credentials.

Timeline: When Does the EUDI Wallet Arrive?

• 2024: eIDAS 2.0 enters into force. Pilot programs launch in several EU countries.
• 2025: Major reference implementations are tested publicly.
• 2026: All member states must provide the wallet. Mandatory acceptance by public authorities.
• 2027+: Broad adoption in private sector applications – ticketing, hotels, age verification.

What Does the EUDI Wallet Mean for Event Organizers?

EUDI Wallet Integration for Event Organizers

EUDI Wallet integration means that an event ticketing platform can issue credentials directly into the attendee's wallet via OpenID4VCI – and scan them at the entrance via the mDoc presentation protocol. Entryix implements this end-to-end:

• Issuance: After purchase, the ticket is issued as a signed mDoc via OpenID4VCI Draft 14 into the attendee's EUDI Wallet.
• Storage: The credential is device-bound and stored securely in the wallet – not in a screenshot or a third-party app.
• Verification: At the event entrance, the Android Scanner App reads the mDoc from the EUDI Wallet in under 1 second, fully offline.

Using the EUDI Wallet at events eliminates paper tickets, PDF forgeries, and QR code sharing. The wallet credential cannot be copied – it is bound to the attendee's device and identity.

EUDI Wallet Ticket Verification – How It Works at the Entrance

EUDI Wallet ticket verification works entirely offline. The scanner app on an Android device reads the mDoc from the attendee's wallet, checks the cryptographic ECDSA signature against the issuer's public key, and confirms validity in under one second – without an internet connection.

This makes EUDI Wallet verification more reliable than standard QR code scanning: no network dependency, no single point of failure, no black market duplicates.

Do Attendees Need the EUDI Wallet?

Yes — Entryix is built exclusively on EUDI Wallet infrastructure. Attendees receive a credential offer link by email, which they open in their EUDI Wallet app to import the ticket as a device-bound mDoc. With the mandatory EUDI Wallet rollout across all 27 EU member states in 2026, every European citizen will have a compatible wallet — making seamless adoption the default.
